In Loving Memory of My Sister and Friend

1 Peter 3:18 "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:"

Each year the offense of robbery affect thousands of lives.  The Depart-ment of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Sept. 2006 release of “Crime in the U.S.”, reported that of all violent crime in 2005, the offense
of robbery had the largest increase, 3.9 percent, compared with the 2004 number.  Unfortunately, some of the victims were not only robbed but murdered, as was my sister, Geni, in 2001.

I will never forget Saturday morning, April 7, 2001.  The phone rang
with my mom on the other end.  She called to inform me that my sister, Geni, who was also my best friend, had been killed.  Broken hearted and emotionally devastated, my response was, “No, no, no…I just talked to her!”  Thursday night, April 5th, was indeed, the last conversation that
I shared with my sister.  I’d called her at her favorite hangout, her salon (Shear Elegance, located in Universal City, Texas, a suburb city outside
of San Antonio).  Geni was busy rinsing out a client’s relaxer but was
never too busy that she couldn’t speak to her little sister.  However, my
call was accepted, we chat and continued making plans for our families
to unite in Houston, TX for the upcoming Easter holiday.  Well, the two families came together for Easter, but it was after the day we buried Geni.

On Friday night, April 6th, Geni’s life ended after her day’s work at the salon.  Prior to leaving, she placed a routine call to her family and
informed them that she was making one stop before proceeding home.  But after she had not made it home within her estimated time of arrival, nor was she answering incoming calls on her cell, her husband ‘s suspicion led him to go looking for her.  He knew it was not her character to alter
her plans without notifying him.  Geni’s husband arrived at the salon and
noticed her SUV parked in the rear of a neighboring Jack-n-the-Box.  To his dismay, he discovered her in the passenger seat covered with salon towels.  She was the murdered victim of an armed robbery, stabbed over 40 times (there were many lacerations on the hands in which she served with).

Respectfully, I may never know the last words my sister uttered before taking her last breath.  But I do know, she had a passion for serving and helping humanity.  Therefore, the poem,“Your Stylist Hands”  was written in remembrance of Geni and the salon service she gave.  Its purpose is to encourage clients to help protect the safety of individuals in the Beauty Industry, so barbers, cosmetologists/stylist, nail technicians etc… may continue providing their clients with ultimate satisfaction, in service and quality.

After Geni’s death, I made a commitment to keep my stylist under-girded in prayer because it is through his or her hands that God takes care of my hair (which is a portion of His glory).  I vowed also, that if I’m the last client in my stylist seat, to help protect his or her safety by sticking around until he or she leaves.  Will you join me?

For the Beauty Industry's, Awareness and Crime Prevention Efforts:
My goal is to share this story, poem and the "Your Stylist Hands"  painting with each of Geni’s fellow entrepreneurs in the Beauty Industry,
as well as with their clients, hoping to help save nations and generations from the tragedy my family lived through.
